Lobby your MP about the welfare cuts: Template email

As NSUN members will know, the Government are in the process of proposing cruel welfare cuts for Disabled claimants. We are expecting the piece of legislation which enacts those changes to enter parliament later this week. This means that very soon, MPs will be voting on whether or not to pass those laws.

While many MPs have committed to voting against them, we still need more. At NSUN we are busily reaching out to MPs, but these messages are always more powerful coming from their own constituents/the people who they supposedly represent. Follow the steps below to Lobby your MP.

Step 1: Identify your MP and their voting intentions

Step 2: Write & send your email

Below is a template you might like to use to email your MP. Areas to personalise are in bold.

Subject line: Welfare cuts (Briefing attached)

Dear INSERT YOUR MP’s NAMEMy name is INSERT YOUR NAME, and I am one of your constituents (my address is: INSERT YOUR ADDRESS).

I am deeply concerned about the Government’s proposed cuts to welfare support for Disabled people. I am worried that these will disproportionately impact those living with mental ill-health, including myself.

[OPTIONAL: Here, you could include a story about yourself, the welfare support you rely on, and how the cuts will impact your life]

I have attached a briefing prepared by National Survivor User Network and Mad Youth Organise, which outlines in detail how the cuts will impact those living with mental ill-health, the limits of the consultation, and the dangers these cuts pose for our health service as a whole.

I urge you to vote against the upcoming bill, at the very least until a full and proper consultation has taken place. I would also be grateful if you could confirm your position on the cuts, including how you intend to vote on the upcoming bill.

Thank you,

INSERT YOUR NAME

Remember!

Remember to attach our briefing to your email.

You can find a Word version of the briefing and more information on lobbying your MP on this page.

Step 3: Let us know who you have contacted

  • Please email our Head of Policy & Campaigns, Courtney, to let us know who you have contacted.
  • You can email again if/when your MP replies, particularly if they confirm their voting intentions.
