Benefits of joining the network

We are here to make sure the voice of experience is heard!

The National Survivor User Network (NSUN) is a network of people who have experience of mental distress, discrimination or disadvantage, who want to change things for the better.

With more than 4000 individuals, 650 groups nd over 100 allies, we are a growing user-led network across England. NSUN has become a credible and influential network that is valued for its independence and unbiased, unfiltered messaging.

You will be a member of a unique collective. Its user-led nature sets it apart from other organisations in the field, and this gives it exceptional insight and authenticity. NSUN is run by and for people with lived experience of mental distress and is based on the principles of mutual support, solidarity, leadership and self-determination.

As a membership organisation it is important to understand that it is the individual service users and survivors and user led groups that run NSUN. We have built an infrastructure that offers support, shares information and good practice, facilitates local, regional and national networking and regularly communicates current developments and news.

NSUN has a tiered membership policy. Signing up is free for individuals who identify as having experience of mental distress and for user led organisations. Others are able to join the network but do not have the same right to shape and influence the organisation, to vote or to attend the Annual General Meeting. We are currently looking at charging a fee to non-user-led organisations, but for now, we suggest you make a donation if you wish to support our work.

Types of membership

We have different categories of membership:

  • Individual member (can vote in our AGM)
  • User Led Organisation/group member (can vote in our AGM)
  • Supporter (can not vote in our AGM)
  • Ally - Voluntary/Public Sector Group and Higher Education Institutions OR Corporate (can not vote in our AGM)

Individual: When you become a member you will be able to network with other members.  You will have access to a wealth of information and resources. You can find individuals and groups that have similar interests or experiences and share examples of good practice. NSUN has a variety of ways that members can share information and debate current issues. Regular and well organised communication amongst the membership contributes to a national voice. It is your voice that feeds the national voice. You can vote in our AGM and share liability (of up to the value of £10) in the case of insolvency.

‘The knowledge that I'm not alone and that there is a 'movement' out there, has given more me confidence to self-advocate in my own care and even to successfully blow the whistle on harmful and dangerous practices’

User Led Organisation: When your group joins NSUN you become part of a unique network that is led by its membership. Driven and led by the experience of its members, you will be able to play an important role in shaping the current work and future ambitions of NSUN. You will network, learn from others, contribute to our policies, and help us by your local experience.  Through our extensive database you will be able to contact groups and individuals across England who have the same interests and concerns as you.  You can exchange good practice and information and get in touch with other groups doing similar work around the country. You can raise your profile by advertising your organisation and any special events in our weekly ebulletins, newsletters, publications, and other information we distribute. You can vote in our AGM and share liability (of up to the value of £10) in the case of insolvency.

‘I really value the regular communication weekly. Really feel that NSUN is acting on behalf of users and is building momentum strategically and also on the ground’.

Supporter: This type of membership means you will still receive all the same communications as a standard individual or group member would, and you can attend our AGM, however you can not vote on motions and have no liability in the case of insolvency.

Ally - Voluntary/Public Sector Group and Higher Education Institutions: Your organisation will be able to link with our wider membership and increase your contact and engagement with the mental health community. You will have the opportunity to communicate with people with direct experience of mental health distress and service use in order to increase your knowledge and understanding of the issues that are important and current. You can not vote in our AGM and have no liability in the case of insolvency.

‘A brilliant small mental health charity that reaches far afield. By service users for service users. Inclusive and effective. National presence despite small group’.

Ally - Corporate: Your membership will support your Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) by strengthening the initiatives you engage with that benefit society and ‘do some social good’. Becoming a member/supporter of NSUN can help you embed sustainability into the core of your business to create shared value for business and society. Through direct contact with people with experience of and expertise in mental health you will be able to more confidently address issues that are often difficult or stigmatising. You can not vote in our AGM but have no liability in the case of insolvency.

‘An organisation that works hard to educate people about mental health, empower mental health service users to take a real role in their care and work as a partner rather than patient’.
